Resilience | Bronze pigment on driftwood | 2020

My journey into the world of moss was sparked by wonder, but as I delved deeper, I found myself drawn to its scientific complexities and the critical role it played in shaping our world. My painting practice became a vehicle for bridging the gap between the ancient and the contemporary, a means of connecting with the past and exploring the depth of our shared history. As anthropologist Deborah Bird Rose suggests we are, all of us, “dense knots of embodied time,” braided from uncountable strands of cross-species actions and giftings. Through my creative process, I entered a knot in time, a liminal space where the threads of past, present, and future interweave. Painting became a window into the density of this knottedness: a complex assemblage of matter, sensation and memory, capturing the temporal resonance and subconscious mindscapes of forgotten times.
